The world around us is constantly changing yet the world of education is slow to evolve. It wasn’t until 2019 when the pandemic hit that school systems began to put one of the most BASIC tools of the modern world into the hands of out students, computers.
Our students need to be prepared for the real world, which means they need real world education. Schools need to begin incorporating new era literacy practices, historically accurate examples of social studies and human relations and centering student’s needs at the core. Many non educators are shocked when they hear that there are middle school students who go their entire academic career without reading ONE novel. Educators in underserved communities aren’t shocked by this fact at all! We know that school systems push curriculum at our students aimed at prepping them for high stakes test that many, unfortunately, ultimately fail.
My approach to literacy is rooted in the idea that our students MUST be engaged through what they read. Without real world interest or engagement, we completely lose our students internal motivation resulting in low performing schools that only fail our children in the end. As a Director of Curriculum Development for a national literacy non profit, I understand this first hand. The materials we create, the activities we engage students in and the ways we interact in our classrooms and hallways, all matter to student learning.
If you’re school or non profit is looking to bring a unique, effective and culturally responsive approach to literacy, set up a 30 minute consultation with me! We can put our heads together to determine your institutions needs and the ways we can bring joy and engagement into your students literacy practices.
